Saree Price Guide: What a Real Saree Should Cost

By Vastra Heritage Editorial Team · Last updated

The same "Banarasi silk saree" can cost ₹2,000 or ₹2,00,000. The difference comes down to four things: fibre (pure silk or blend), loom (handloom or powerloom), zari (pure, tested or imitation) and design density. This guide gives indicative price ranges so you can spot a fair deal.

Note: ranges are indicative for India in 2026 and vary by city, seller, weight and design. Use them as a sanity check, not a quote.

What you can expect at each budget

  • Under ₹3,000: handloom cottons (Tant, Chettinad, Kasavu), printed Ajrakh, simpler Bandhani, and powerloom or blended "silk" sarees. Treat any "pure Banarasi" or "pure Kanjivaram" claim at this price with caution.
  • ₹3,000 – ₹10,000: Chanderi silk-cotton, Maheshwari, Tussar, Sambalpuri and Pochampally ikat, lighter Mysore silks, and good powerloom Banarasis. A strong range for festive and office wear.
  • ₹10,000 – ₹30,000: entry-level handloom Banarasi and Kanjivaram with tested zari, Paithani with simpler pallus, finer Bandhani in silk. The usual range for wedding guests.
  • ₹30,000 – ₹1,00,000: heavier handloom brocades, denser Kanjivaram bridal designs, Baluchari with detailed pallus, Muga silk, Rajkot Patola.
  • Above ₹1,00,000: pure-zari bridal Banarasi and Kanjivaram, heirloom Paithani and Patan double-ikat Patola — pieces meant to be passed down.

Handloom vs powerloom: why the price gap is so large

A handloom weaver may produce a few centimetres of complex brocade a day, while a powerloom can weave a full saree in hours. That labour difference is most of the price gap. Powerloom sarees are a fair choice when priced honestly; the problem is powerloom sold as handloom. Our reverse-side weave check helps you tell them apart.

What drives a saree's price

  • Silk weight: a heavy Kanjivaram can use far more silk than a light Mysore silk.
  • Zari type: pure zari contains silver and gold, so its price moves with metal prices.
  • Weaving time: dense brocade (kadhua) Banarasis and double-ikat Patolas can take weeks to months.
  • Design complexity: jangla (all-over) patterns and figurative pallus cost more than simple butis.
  • Certification: Silk Mark, GI labels and weaver-society bills add confidence, and often value.

How to avoid overpaying

  1. Decide the budget and grade first (handloom vs powerloom, tested vs pure zari).
  2. Run the checks in our pure silk identification guide.
  3. Ask for a bill that states the fibre, loom type and zari type.
  4. Compare two or three sellers for the same weave before buying.
  5. Be wary of "90% off" pure-silk offers — the raw silk alone often costs more.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a real Banarasi silk saree?

A handloom Banarasi katan silk saree with tested zari typically costs about ₹10,000 to ₹60,000. Pure-zari and heavily brocaded pieces can exceed ₹2,00,000. Powerloom versions start around ₹2,000.

What is the price of an original Kanjivaram saree?

Handloom Kanjivaram sarees with tested zari usually start around ₹12,000. Pure-zari bridal Kanjivarams often cost ₹60,000 to ₹3,00,000 or more.

Why are pure zari sarees so expensive?

Pure zari is made from silver thread electroplated with gold, so the metal alone adds significant cost, on top of the silk and the weeks of handloom weaving.

Can I get a pure silk saree under ₹5,000?

Light pure silks such as some Tussar, Chanderi silk-cotton or Mysore silk may be available near that price, but heavy handloom Banarasi or Kanjivaram silk at that price is usually a blend or powerloom.
