Bhai Dooj 2026: Date, Tilak Ritual, Regional Customs, Gifts and What to Wear

By Vastra Heritage Editorial Team · Last updated

Bhai Dooj 2026 falls on Wednesday, 11 November, the second day of the bright half of Kartik and the last of the five Diwali days. Sisters apply tilak on their brothers' foreheads, perform aarti and pray for their long life; brothers bless their sisters and give gifts.

It is the same festival under many names: Bhai Beej in Gujarat, Bhaubeej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Bhatri Dwitiya in Odisha, Bhai Tika in Nepal and Yama Dwitiya in the scriptures. Unlike Raksha Bandhan, where the sister ties a rakhi, on Bhai Dooj the brother traditionally visits his sister's home and is fed and honoured there.

Quick answers:

  • Date: Wednesday, 11 November 2026 (Kartik Shukla Dwitiya).
  • Best time for tilak: traditionally the afternoon (Aparahna Kaal); check your local panchang for exact times.
  • What sisters do: tilak, aarti, a sweet, and a meal for the brother.
  • What brothers do: touch the sister's feet (in many families), give a gift and a promise of protection.
  • What to wear: light festive outfits after five busy days: a silk-cotton saree, a suit or sharara for sisters; a kurta set for brothers.

The story behind Bhai Dooj

Yama visits his sister Yamuna

The best-known story is of Yama, the god of death, and his twin sister Yamuna. Yamuna invited her brother to her home many times, and finally on this day he came. She welcomed him with a tilak, aarti and a feast. Moved by her love, Yama granted a boon: any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day will be protected from untimely death. That is why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya.

Krishna visits Subhadra

Another story says that after defeating Narakasura, Lord Krishna went to his sister Subhadra, who welcomed him with a tilak, flowers and sweets. Families remember this visit too.

Why the brother goes to the sister's home

In many traditions, married daughters rarely visited their parents' homes in the past. Bhai Dooj gave brothers a reason to visit their sisters after Diwali, keeping family ties strong. The custom continues: many sisters still cook their brothers' favourite food on this day.

How to do the Bhai Dooj tilak, step by step

What you need on the thali

  • Roli or kumkum, and a few grains of rice (akshat)
  • A small diya with ghee
  • Sweets, often the brother's favourite
  • A dry coconut (gola) or betel leaf and nut, in many North Indian homes
  • Flowers and a little water in a kalash

The ritual

  1. Prepare a seat for the brother facing north or east, and draw a small rangoli or chowk near it if your family does so.
  2. Apply tilak of roli and rice on his forehead.
  3. Perform aarti with the diya, circling the thali clockwise.
  4. Offer a sweet and, in some families, the coconut.
  5. Pray for his long life and well-being.
  6. The brother gives his gift and blessings, and in many homes touches his elder sister's feet.
  7. Share a meal: the sister serves lunch, often the brother's favourite dishes.

Sisters often fast until the tilak is done. Families without a brother or sister do the tilak for cousins, or for a deity such as Lord Krishna.

Bhai Dooj thali decoration ideas

A pretty thali makes the tilak feel special and photographs beautifully. Easy ideas:

  • Flower border: line the edge of a steel or brass thali with marigold and rose petals.
  • Mirror-work thali: stick small mirrors and gota lace around the rim, a Gujarati touch that catches the diya light.
  • Rangoli on the plate: draw a small swastik or flower in the centre with kumkum and turmeric.
  • Reusable fabric base: place a square of leftover Bandhani or brocade fabric under the bowls.

Making Bhai Dooj fun for children

For young siblings, Bhai Dooj is often their first memory of the festival. Keep it simple and joyful:

  • Let them choose and decorate their own small thali.
  • Dress them in soft cotton festive clothes that do not itch during the long lunch.
  • Help them write a card or draw a picture as their gift.
  • Take the tilak photo early, before the excitement of the day tires them out.

Practical notes

  • Fasting: many sisters stay hungry until the tilak and then eat together; follow your family's custom, and do not fast if you are unwell.
  • Direction: brothers usually sit facing north or east for the tilak.
  • Timing: if the afternoon is busy, families do the tilak at the time their panchang suggests and keep the meal flexible.

Bhai Dooj photo ideas

  • The tilak moment: photograph from the side so both faces and the diya are in the frame.
  • Then and now: recreate an old childhood Bhai Dooj photo in the same pose.
  • Thali close-up: the decorated thali on a Bandhani or silk cloth with soft window light.
  • Family lunch: a wide shot of everyone at the table; it is the photo families treasure most later.

Celebrating Bhai Dooj from a distance

When siblings live in different cities or countries:

  • Video tilak: many sisters do the aarti on a video call, and the brother applies the tilak himself at the same moment.
  • Send a tilak kit: a small pouch of roli, rice and a sweet, posted a week in advance.
  • Order a meal: send his favourite food to his door at lunchtime.
  • Time zones: agree a time that falls in the afternoon in at least one of your cities.
